Confidence. Most people will say that you are either born confident or not.

First of all, I want to call bullshit. As with any personal skill, confidence can be learnt so if you weren’t ‘born with it‘ then I’m here to tell you that you can build your confidence using the following affirmations to increase confidence.

When I was younger, I wasn’t confident at all. I was always the ‘quiet one’ and people would tell me to ‘speak up more’. These comments stayed with me for years and the worst part is… I believed them. I would make excuses like ‘oh no, I’m not confident enough to do that’ instead of pushing myself.

It wasn’t until I left school that I realised all of my fears and negative beliefs could be broken down and replaced with new, positive beliefs. Crazy right.

If you’re reading this you probably believe you’re not a confident person. Maybe you’ve got a job interview coming up or you are wanting to make some new friends. Maybe you are tired of reciting what you want to say before you get to the checkout. Trust me when I say, your confidence is already inside of you and these affirmations will help you find it.

With daily practice, these affirmations will increase your confidence and help you change your life.

So, what are affirmations?

First things first, what exactly are affirmations? Well, affirmations are words or phrases that when repeated often, have a positive impact on our mental image of ourselves.

Recently, I read an article that shocked me. It said that 80% of our thoughts are negative. Whether that be about ourselves or others, that is a hell of a lot of negativity.

Affirmations work by slowly changing your mindset and way of thinking. Your brain cannot tell the different between what is real and what isn’t. Therefore, if you start choosing to think thoughts like ‘I love my life’ instead of ‘I hate myself’ your mind will work hard to make that positive thought your reality.

Affirmations work by changing the negative narrative in your head and replacing it with a new, positive script. Once you identify your negative thoughts you can use affirmations to increase confidence.

How to use affirmations

Below I’ve listed the two most common ways to incorporate affirmations into your everyday. People use affirmations differently so take some time to see which method works best for you.

Journal Affirmations

Journaling is my favorite way of using affirmations. As part of my everyday journaling routine, I write down 3 affirmations that I want to remember and repeat throughout the day.

These affirmations change based on my feelings and the things that are going on in my life. Sometimes all my affirmations will be centered around confidence and other days its anxiety.

Spoken Affirmations

Voicing your affirmations out loud is probably the most popular way of using affirmations. However, I know that standing before a mirror and talking to yourself doesn’t always feel comfortable.

Instead, try this. When you catch yourself in an anxious situation, try speaking your affirmation quietly to yourself. This may feel odd to begin with but speaking your affirmations out loud will help solidify it in your mind.

So, choose 2-3 affirmations that resonate with you from the list below and try using them to increase your confidence.

Remember: Patience is key. Using affirmations is not an overnight, quick fix. It takes time to replace your negative thoughts but taking these small steps will turn you into the master of your own mind.

    As someone who was also quite shy growing up, I have really had to work at improving my confidence and I definitely agree training ourselves to think positive thoughts helps.
