We all have different priorities. Kids, work, family. Your priorities will be different to the lady who served you coffee this morning or the man who walks past your house walking his dog everyday. They may even be different to your partners. But let me ask you a question, where are you on your list of priorities.
When I asked myself this, I couldn’t even place myself on my list. I put everything above myself and then I wondered why I felt overwhelmed everyday.
Making yourself a priority is the ultimate form of self care. Taking the time to allow your body and mind to rest will help you feel energized. You cannot take care of others if you are letting yourself run dry. Keep reading to find ways to incorporate self care into your routine and prioritize yourself.
1. Find Self Care Activities That You Enjoy
Practicing self care is a great way to prioritize yourself. Self care activities are centered around your needs and the things you love. So, take some time to work out what YOU love to do.
For me, I enjoy spending time outdoors. I make a conscious effort to bike to and from work everyday. Biking helps me feel awake, refreshed and energized. Whenever I feel stressed or as if I am slipping down my list of priorities, I take a moment to myself with a cup of tea and a good book.
2. Schedule Your Day
Having a schedule will help you find the time to prioritize yourself. If you have a rough idea of what you need to do, where and when, then you will start to see little pockets of time arise that you can use for yourself.
I keep a planner which I write in everyday. Every morning, while I have breakfast I fill out a page for the day. I include a ‘to do’ list with tick boxes and a section where I fill out what I have done for myself.

3. Set Goals
I’m sure you have a couple of goals you really want to achieve. Maybe you want to get a new job, start a family, buy a house or even go back to school. Whatever your goal is, write it down and draft the steps it will take you to get there.

You don’t have to stick to your plan but the act of planning is key. Creating a plan will enable you to see that your goal is achievable and a path you can take to get there.
4. Practice Gratitude
It took me a long time to start practicing gratitude. I would obsess over the negatives, letting them consume. When I began to practice gratitude it completely altered my perspective on my life and my problems.
Practice gratitude as part of your daily morning routine. Take a moment to yourself while you have breakfast or get ready. Grab a piece of paper or your favorite notebook and start to brainstorm your gratitude. Title your paper ‘Things I am grateful for’ and make a list of all thing things you are grateful for. Think little and think big. Your life, your family, friends and even your ability to see. Make a list of EVERYTHING you can think of that you are grateful for.
