With most of the world going into self-isolation to protect themselves against Covid-19, it is more important than ever to practice self-care and prioritize your mental health.
For many of us who suffer from mental illness, a lot of our self-care activities involve other people and activities that we cannot do with the current self-isolation guidelines. For must of us, our lives have been turned upside down, no work, no school, so it is important to maintain good mental health during these uncertain times.
Below are a few ideas on how to practice self-care in self-isolation. It is important to stay safe during this pandemic, both mentally and physically. Keep in touch with loved ones
Keeping in touch with your friends and family is arguably the most important form of self-care in self-isolation. It is so easy to begin to feel lonely, lost or trapped when you can’t see anyone outside of your household. Call, text, and facetime your loved ones every day. It might not feel like much but this little connection will help you both feel less alone.
So simple, right? But you’re not going out today so one more day of not washing your hair won’t hurt. One day turns into two, then three then before you know it you haven’t showered in 4 days.
We’re all outside of our usual routine right now so it is important to develop a new routine filled with healthy habits. It doesn’t matter if you prefer showers or baths, make sure you are taking care of yourself daily.
Tidy and Declutter
Picture this. I’m typing up this post, its 8 pm at night. Behind me is my unmade bed, pillows and blankets are scattered all over the room. There are two empty mugs beside me from my tea breaks and an empty crisp packet.
Why am I telling you this? Because we are all struggling with staying at home all day. Whether you are a tidy person or not, keeping your space tidy is an essential part of self-care in self-isolation. You can bet your ass I’m going to make my bed, take my dirty cups to the sink and put that rubbish in the bin. Keep your space tidy to keep your mind tidy.
If you’re looking for something to do for the day, declutter a room in your house. I spent my first day in quarantine de-cluttering my bedroom and some of the shit I found I didn’t even know I owned! I found a brand new pool noodle under my bed that I cannot remember buying.
Declutter your room. You’ll thank me later.
Learn a new skill
I would bet money that at some point in the past 6 months you’ve wanted to start a project but ‘not had the time’. If there is one thing this Lockdown has given us is an abundance of time. With no excuses, now is your chance!
Learn a new language, start a vegetable patch in your garden, start that youtube channel or blog. Whatever project you want to start or skill you want to learn, go for it!
I’m using this time to develop and grow both of my businesses while attempting to better my french.
Focus on personal development
I guess this kind of ties into the last point as personal development habits often fall under leaning a new skill. When the world feels as if it’s weighing down your shoulders the last thing you want to do is think about your mental wellness but now is the best time. Now is the perfect opportunity to explore your subconscious and inner desires.
Daily journaling is a great way to tap into your subconscious. It is also a healthy way to process and express your emotions in a safe, controlled environment. You don’t need a fancy journal to start, grab any blank notebook, and explore these journal prompts for self-discovery. Try 1-2 prompts a day to get started.
Keep in the present
If you find your anxiety increases when you think about the current pandemic or what the future might hold, you are likely to be feeling coronavirus anxiety. It is a difficult loop to escape as no one truly knows what the future may look like for us however, practicing living in the present may help decrease these feelings of anxiety.
So what do I mean by practicing living in the present? What this means is taking each day at a time without making any future plans or looking too far ahead. Try to limit how much coronavirus information you read or listen to throughout the day as this will encourage your anxiety.
Keeping your mind in the present day is difficult. We all want to think about what we’re going to do when the virus passes however this will encourage anxious feelings. Instead, ask yourself every day what you are going to do that day to be productive, helpful, kind or courageous.
It’s important to remember you are not stuck at home, you are safe at home. Stay inside and stay safe. My messages are always open if you need someone to talk to so please reach out if you’re feeling lonely.
