When we’re children, we believe we can do anything. Yet somewhere on the journey to adulthood, self-doubt creeps in and we begin to question our abilities. However, I’m here to show you there are ways to overcome self-doubt and rediscover that childlike belief.
What is self-doubt

As a child, I remember wanting to be an artist. I would spend hours painting, drawing, sewing and basically being as creative as possible. It was a huge dream of mine and I wanted to create art that people would love and cherish.
However, as I got older, adults began telling me that I would never be an artist.
They would say things like:
You can’t make money as an artist.
You need a career.
Art is just a hobby, you need a proper job.
The problem with sharing their opinion in this way is that as children, everything we hear we retain as facts. This means that all of the little comments made to you as a child stay in your mind and become your own limiting beliefs.
This is how self-doubt is formed and we begin to build our own limiting beliefs.
How self-doubt impacts your life.
Hanging onto self-doubt will massively affect your life and happiness. It is important to understand how self-doubt impacts your life so that you can let go and move forward.
Lack of motivation
When you don’t believe in yourself, fear can get in the way of your dreams. Over time this can turn into a lack of motivation. This lack of motivation can affect your entire life, through an unsatisfying relationship, a job you hate, or even a life you feel trapped in.
Self-doubt can also cause you to procrastinate and become a perfectionist. Through this sort of thinking, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Nothing is perfect so you might as well start now.
Manifests as regrets
Self-doubt causes you to hold back when great opportunities present themselves. You might put off going for that new job or starting that online course. When you’re still in the same position you were in a year prior, it is common to feel regret.
If you’re not making any changes in life, you’re not changing your life. Self-doubt limits self-improvement due to fear. This could be financial fear, relationship fear, or fear of change. You need to let go of fear and embrace self-improvement.

Self-doubt has held me back for so long and sometimes it still does. However, once you begin to acknowledge your limiting beliefs you can work on challenging them and overcoming self-doubt.
Once you overcome your self-doubt, you will be able to achieve everything you ever wanted to.
You can get the job you always wanted.
You can find the partner of your dreams.
And finally, you can live a life without fear or worry.

Self-doubt can take a strong hold on your life and keep you from achieving your full potential.
If left unchecked, self-doubt can take over your life and prevent you from living life to the fullest. So, here are 8 ways you can overcome self-doubt and begin living a fulfilled life.
Call out your inner critic
Our inner critic lives within our subconscious which changes our behavior and shapes our thoughts and feelings. When your mind tells you you cannot do something, your behavior will follow suit. This is why we have to call out our inner critic.
Being able to recognize your subconscious thoughts will take time and practice. In your journal, it is a good idea to keep a log of your defeatist thoughts and feelings.
Challenge your limiting beliefs
When you feel self-doubt arise, take a moment to pause and explore the thought connected to it. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to call out your inner critic.
Where did this belief come from?
What is this belief about?
Has this belief ever been proven?
More often than not, out limiting beliefs are just that, Beliefs. There is no truth or evidence behind them, just our own fear and perception. Challenging your limiting beliefs will help you see that you can overcome your self-doubt and step outside of your comfort zone.
Feel your fears
It’s important to feel your fears in order to understand where they come from. So, ask yourself where this fear came from.
Was it from past failures?
Was it from the failure or others?
Remember, you have control over this fear. So, grab your journal and start to understand it.
Stop fearing failure
Most of the time, out self-doubt centers around a previous failure. These can be the failures of others or our own.
The important thing to remember is failure simply means you tried. It means that you pushed yourself and have the ability within you to do it again.
Every-time fear arises, challenge it by remembering every-time you have succeeded. The only way to overcome these fears is to go through them instead of running away.
Shift your mindset
When we’re battling with self-doubt, you will be experiencing a negative mindset as well. This is where you view the world through a negative lens. However, if you shift your mindset and see the world as full of opportunities and abundance, you’ll attract more positivity and banish self-doubt.
Changing your mindset isn’t easy. It is rewiring years of default, negative thoughts. However, a great place to start is by using daily affirmations.

Take care of yourself
It’s impossible to overcome self-doubt if you’re feeling low and unloved. That is why self-care is so important.
When you feel good, you gain confidence which in turn encourages you to do more. Practicing self-love every day will allow you to accept yourself and your unique abilities. When you love yourself, there is no room left for self-doubt to grow.
Surround yourself with positivity
To overcome self-doubt you need to surround yourself with positive influences. If you are surrounded by negative people and situations, you will find it impossible to focus on self-improvement.
A great way to start is by unfollowing negative accounts on social media. Go through your Instagram and get rid of any negative influences and replace them with uplifting content.

Stop comparing yourself to others
You need to ditch self-comparison. Like, yesterday.
Comparing yourself to others is a sure fire way to make you feel inadequate. It is so easy to compare yourself to others, especially when it comes to social media.
However, behind these picture perfect accounts there is often a very different reality. Unless you are living someone’s life, you don’t see the whole picture.
So, stop comparing yourself. Nobody is perfect and you should love yourself fully, imperfections as well.
You’re human. Things do go wrong and you’ll make mistakes.
You might fail but damn, at least you tried. Don’t beat yourself up. Get up off the ground and start chasing your goals again because you deserve to love your life.
