3 REAL Ways To Practice Self-Love

Recently, my mental health has taken a bit of a nosedive and I began to neglect myself, both physically, mentally and spiritually.

The honest truth is this happens to us all, more than we’d probably like to admit. Some days are just bad days but these are the moments where you need to take care of yourself the most. Self-love is more important than your routine. So, take some time to love yourself.

If you’re going through a mental blip or just wanting to start feeling good about yourself, try these 5 real ways to practice self-love.

What is self-love?

I only started to practice real self-love recently. After years of negatively tearing my mind and body down, I realized I needed to learn to love myself.

The truth is you are the only person you have to spend the rest of your life with so you better start loving yourself.

Self-love is about taking care of yourself like you would a friend or family member. It means having a high regard for your happiness and well-being. Many people have the misconception that self-love is selfish or the same as having a ‘big ego’.

First off, self love is not selfish.

Secondly, this misconception makes me mad. Like Hades mad.

Why shouldn’t you love yourself and show yourself compassion? Why can’t you look at yourself in a mirror and smile because you’re happy being you? You deserve self-love and I promise you to deserve to be happy.

Why practice self-love?

In the pursuit of self-love, I have been listening to my body and getting in touch with my subconscious in order to understand what I truly need. Practicing self-love will improve your relationship with yourself and open up a whole world of new opportunities. How? Well, self-love is a mindset that once you nurture has the potential to improve so many areas of your life. It will help you let go of your mental limitations and understand what you truly want from life.

Rest

Yes, I’m talking about sleep but resting is not just about your sleep schedule. It is about how you spend your free time or how you relieve stress after a busy day.

7-9 hours sleep is the optimum amount to aim for. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule because rest is an essential part of practising self-love.

Other ways to rest is to focus on activities that you find relaxing. For me this usually means reading either fiction or personal development books. Audio books are a great alternative if you’re not a big reader. As well as helping you relax, reading is a great way to expand your knowledge.

Yoga is a great way to relieve stress after a busy day and encourage your body to relax. I don’t go to any yoga classes, I simply practice from the comfort of my own home using Yoga with Adriene on youtube.

All of her videos are easy to understand and she has videos for every single thing imaginable.

Show Gratitude

As I mentioned above, self-love is a mindset. If you constantly find yourself plagued by negative thoughts about yourself, then practicing self-love will help you overcome this. Showing gratitude towards others and yourself is the first step in this mindset shift.

Showing kindness to yourself and the people around you brings positivity into your surroundings. When you’re getting ready, don’t look in the mirror and pick faults with yourself instead, find something you love. Maybe it is your eyes, your smile, your freckles or even your eyelashes. Show yourself kindness.

Heal

I talk a lot about mental health here because I often find self-love and mental illness go hand in hand with each other. My lack of love for myself comes from my depression. It causes me to view myself as a failure and constantly criticize my actions, thoughts, and body.

In order to love yourself, you have to heal past traumas that may be impacting your view.
